Unique Targeted Laser Energy Treatment of Axillary Hyperhidrosis
10/26/2017
Axillary hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating of the armpits, affects over 1.4% of the U.S. population or over 4 million individuals. It is characterized by excessive underarm sweating which is worsened by stressful situations which trigger the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight). This can often have a negative impact on a person’s quality of life. Patients often report having to wear extra clothing or t-shirts and changing many times a day, especially in stressful situations. Topical treatments and medications are often less than effective and have many side effects. Botox is effective but requires multiple painful injections every six months.
We now offer a 1440 nm nd YAG-pulsed laser treatment that takes about 45 minutes and can result in permanent reduction of excessive axillary sweating. In a recent study in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, all the treated patients reported improvement at one year, and 72% reported complete resolution. Twenty percent of patients had a second treatment. As you can see in the video above, this is an awake procedure done under local anesthesia with minimal pain. This treatment is permanent without the additional expense and pain of frequent Botox shots.
